Public Policy - HB514 PDF Print Email

Dear Mecklenburg Legislator:

The Children’s Alliance is a network of over 40 agencies serving children and youth in Mecklenburg County. We regularly identify public policy matters that we believe are important to the children and families we serve.  We are writing to you to express our concerns and disagreement with the recent passage of HB514.

As we understand it, this bill allows townships in Mecklenburg Count to own and operate charter schools and also allow these communities to use local property taxes to pay for these schools and give seating preferences to their residents. We join many others in our county to believe that this bill will allow for:

  • no clear path for higher academic achievement
  • the potential to disrupt public education
  • driving taxes higher, and
  • a more segregated school system and fewer educational choices for children/parents

These consequences would impact our public schools not only in Mecklenburg County, but potentially have impact statewide. We recognize that this bill has been passed and that plans are being made to implement its intended goals. It is our hope that given the opportunity to revisit this matter OR future considerations around similar legislation, that you will thoughtfully consider the negative impact we believe this bill will have on our schools and students.

Sincerely,

The Children’s Alliance
